Philistines (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 7, 2014 - November 7, 2014

Our first production of the season is Maxim Gorky's Philistines, under UK Director, David Zoob, and in a new adaptation by Andrew Upton. The play is fuelled by two of the greatest historical and cultural events of the 20th century: the impending Russian revolution and the arrival of naturalism on the stage. Gorky knew well the overwhelming pressure building up in Russia, and his writing grapples with the vast changes that were pressing inevitably into his society. When the play opened in 1902, there were riots in the theatre. Everyone could feel the fabric of their society tearing. Naturalism, dealing as it did with everyday characters, situations and environments expressed the idea that all lives mattered, that what anyone did and felt mattered, that it could become drama and could, in fact, affect the world. In Gorky's Russia, this mix was intoxicating and dangerous; it was theatre that did something in the world. It upset people; it made them think. That's what good theatre does and this production will make you sit up, take notice and ask questions about power, society, justice, and humanity.

Category: Other Event

#3CL: Three City Link: Regina-Coventry-Gyumri (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 3, 2014 - November 3, 2014

#3CL: Three City Link is a collaborative project linking Fine Arts researchers, artists and students in three cities: Regina, SK; Coventry, UK; and Gyumri, Armenia. Concerned with issues of peaceability and citizenship, the project brings into contact three cities with complex histories, given that Regina is a place struggling with the legacy of colonization and Canada's cultural genocide of Indigenous people; Coventry is officially designated an international city of Peace and Reconciliation related to its devastation in WWII; and Gyumri is a city recovering from the legacies of war, genocide and natural disaster. The aim of the project is to create a context where new forms of translocal dialogues can occur through creative interactions using online screen-based media and on-the-ground dialogues. For the duration of the two-week live-event, running November 3-14, gallery spaces in each city will host students as they create an unfolding dialogue of images, sounds, videos, physical structures, objects and stories in response to the question of how artists can shift the narratives of their cities beyond histories of trauma toward linked creative futures. Regina: 5th Parallel Gallery Coventry: Lanchester Gallery Gyumri: Gallery 25 Berlin Art Hotel

India at the Crossroads: The Meanings of Modi’s Victory (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 30, 2014 - October 30, 2014

Presented by Vivek Dehejia, Professor of Economics, Carleton University In May 2014, the Indian general elections produced a generational shift in Indian politics, with the defeat of the incumbent Congress party and the election of the haratiya Janata Party, a centre right party with Hindu leanings, led by Narendra Modi who is now Prime Minister. Did Modi win as many believe because of his promises to jumpstart the Indian economy and because of voters' disgust with the corruption and drift in the last years of Congress rule? Is it because Modi's humble origins resonated with voters? Or instead were voters responding to Modi's social message and a resurfacing of Hindu nationalism? What does Modi's monumental victory mean both for India's economy and relations with the rest of the world? Finally, what does Modi's victory mean for Canada? Dehejia had the unique opportunity spend the entire election campaign season on the ground in India and will share his thoughts, analyses, and opinions on the questions above, and more generally on the course of economic policy reform in India since the 1991 liberalization to the present day and beyond.

Beyond the Criminal Law: What Local & Provincial Authorities Can Do to Regulate Sexually-Oriented Business (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 23, 2014 - October 23, 2014

Law Foundation of Saskatchewan Lecture Beyond the Criminal Law: What Local & Provincial Authorities Can Do to Regulate Sexually-Oriented Business Guest Speaker: Dr. Mariana Valverde, FRSC Professor of Criminology Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies University of Toronto The proposed new federal prostitution law has attracted a great deal of attention, but few Canadians know much about the alternatives: for example, few know that Australia and New Zealand, though they have very similar criminal codes, have almost completely decriminalized prostitution. Also, it is not widely known that some Canadian cities have long regulated (through licensing) some sex work, in the form of escort services. This talk reviews existing laws and policies, focusing mainly on the common-law jurisdictions of Australia and New Zealand, and also goes over existing Canadian municipal business licensing schemes. It will be shown that some regulatory schemes have proven to be as problematic, for the workers and for authorities, as criminalization. But Canada - and especially its provinces, territories, and municipalities - is in an excellent position to benefit from what has been learned from the over ten years of regulatory experiences in other countries.

How Ottawa Mandarins Planned Canada's Post-World War II Peace (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 17, 2014 - October 17, 2014

Presented by Peter Neary, Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor, Department of History, University of Western Ontario Soon after the Second World War started, Ottawa public servants began planning for the return of peace. In December 1939 a cabinet committee on demobilization and rehabilitation was formed, and on 1 October 1941, PC 7633 laid the foundation for a comprehensive benefit package for those serving in military uniform. As plans became reality, individual and institutional lives were transformed by a public policy initiative of unprecedented magnitude. The public servants who fashioned and directed all this paved the way to the golden future time of the 1950s, when Canada leaped forward economically.

Health Care Regionalization in Alberta: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 17, 2014 - October 17, 2014

Presented by Dr. John Church, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Alberta In 1994, Alberta replaced roughly 200 local health care boards with 17 regional health authorities. Over the next 14 years, this "new" Canadian approach to governance and delivery would evolve into an increasingly centralized process of decision-making, culminating in the creation of Alberta Health Services, a single organization responsible for almost all health services in the province. Dr. Church will discuss the policy influences driving this evolution and reflect on the resulting opportunities and challenges.

Brushes with Death: The Great War and the Group of Seven (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 15, 2014 - October 15, 2014

By 1914 a group of young artists had come together in Toronto to form a school of painting dedicated to capturing what they saw as the savage beauty of the Canadian landscape. After the outbreak of WWI interrupted their assault on the conservative bastions of Canadian art, one of the painters, J.E.H. MacDonald, prophesied that his friends and fellow artists would soon return from the battlefields of Europe to finish the job they had begun: "They will interpret for us with deeper insight the distinctive beauty of the land they have served." This free lecture by Dr. Ross King will examine how their varied experience of war allowed the painters who first exhibited as the Group of Seven in 1920 to interpret the landscape with a "deeper insight," and how images of the Western Front continued to haunt their paintings. This lecture is one in a series of Centenary Reflections Lectures the University of Regina is hosting to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

Many Revelations, Many Voices: Religion, the Late Medieval University, and Some Challenges for Today Presented by Dr. Paul Shore "Religious experience played a key role in the life of the late medieval university. But how can we talk about this phenomenon, which resists quantification and must often be interpolated from surviving records? This talk will explore the ways choral music, theological controversy, modes of preaching, clerical formation and the growth of professional training all shaped the religious aspects of life in European universities of the 14th and 15th centuries, with implications that are still with us today."
