Brushes with Death: The Great War and the Group of Seven (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 15, 2014 - October 15, 2014

By 1914 a group of young artists had come together in Toronto to form a school of painting dedicated to capturing what they saw as the savage beauty of the Canadian landscape. After the outbreak of WWI interrupted their assault on the conservative bastions of Canadian art, one of the painters, J.E.H. MacDonald, prophesied that his friends and fellow artists would soon return from the battlefields of Europe to finish the job they had begun: "They will interpret for us with deeper insight the distinctive beauty of the land they have served." This free lecture by Dr. Ross King will examine how their varied experience of war allowed the painters who first exhibited as the Group of Seven in 1920 to interpret the landscape with a "deeper insight," and how images of the Western Front continued to haunt their paintings. This lecture is one in a series of Centenary Reflections Lectures the University of Regina is hosting to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

Many Revelations, Many Voices: Religion, the Late Medieval University, and Some Challenges for Today Presented by Dr. Paul Shore "Religious experience played a key role in the life of the late medieval university. But how can we talk about this phenomenon, which resists quantification and must often be interpolated from surviving records? This talk will explore the ways choral music, theological controversy, modes of preaching, clerical formation and the growth of professional training all shaped the religious aspects of life in European universities of the 14th and 15th centuries, with implications that are still with us today."

Working in the shadows for transparency: Russ Hiebert, LabourWatch, Nanos Research, and the Making of Bill C-377 (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 8, 2014 - October 8, 2014

Private member's Bill C-377 "An Act to amend the Income Tax Act (requirements for labour organizations)" has generated significant controversy since it was introduced in late-2011. The proposed Act will require trade unions to publicly disclose detailed financial information about their activities as well as information about the proportion of time union leaders engage in political and lobbying activities. This presentation explains the generation of public and political support for C-377 by examining the connection between an influential 2011 LabourWatch-sponsored Nanos Research poll that reported 83% of Canadians supported public disclosure of union financial information, the Conservative government's anti-union agenda, and the political economy of polling agencies in Canada. We draw on data from Hansard transcripts, individual interviews with key informants, freedom of information requests, personal correspondence between the authors and the parties involved in the LabourWatch-Nanos Research poll, and newspaper reports. We find that the actions of groups and individuals associated with creating, disseminating, and reviewing the LabourWatch-Nanos Research poll show contempt for the principle of transparency.

Lynch, Vice-Chairman, BMO Financial Group Panel speakers: Louise Greenberg, Ph.D., Deputy Minister, Advanced Education, Government of Saskatchewan Harold MacKay, Counsel, MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP Ron Styles, President and CEO, SaskTel The world is in the midst of profound change, driven by the intersecting trends of globalization, information technology, energy, demographics, and education. What do these mean for continued success and prosperity in mid-sized western countries like Canada? What are the implications for governing in a hyperconnected global economy? These are not issues easily solved, but from a governing perspective, they must be publicly discussed and debated if we are to manage these forces of change well.

Beyond the Book Lecture: Eating myself crazy with Treena Wynes (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 7, 2014 - October 7, 2014

We humans have an emotional dependency on food. We eat chocolate when we're sad or depressed, but most of us don't know why it makes us feel better when we do. Yet, that relief is usually temporary, and worse, can thrust us in the opposite emotional direction - it's not a long-term solution to coping with the stresses of life, and can end up causing more stress in the form of unwanted weight gain and other health problems. In Eating Myself Crazy, former bulimic, lifestyle consultant and life coach Treena Wynes not only tells her story of food addiction and how a personal crisis sparked her path to recovery, but also shares valuable information for others struggling with emotional eating issues. Treena shares simple easy-to-swallow bites of important mind/body facts related to food and emotion as well as encouraging her audience to dig deep to uncover deeply hidden reasons for seeking out emotional relief in food. Finally, she offers simple and flexible strategies and tools that can be used to suit any individual's lifestyle and needs.

Faculty of Business Administration Speaker Series (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 3, 2014 - October 3, 2014

Dr. Masahiro Watanabe of the School of Business at the University of Alberta will present "Understanding the Pre-FOMC Announcement Drift" Abstract: Using high-frequency stock level trade data, we study potential drivers of the puzzling drift in aggregate equity prices prior to FOMC announcements. We find that purchases dominate as volume falls during the pre-FOMC window. This makes the trades more informative. When we condition price changes on the aggregate five-minute order imbalance, the pre-FOMC drift becomes insignificant, implying that the drift can be explained by increased buying pressure for individual stocks. Conditioning on the market imbalance eliminates the drift in six size-BM sorted portfolios, while incorporating portfolio imbalances is less successful. Imbalances in small (large) trades do well at explaining the small (big) stock drift. These results suggest that more intense trading in a thinner market can explain part of the drift, and imply that solutions to the pre-FOMC drift puzzle could revolve around uncovering the identities of traders who buy more aggressively before FOMC announcements.

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 29, 2014 - September 29, 2014

His play, Sequence, won the 2011 Alberta Playwriting Competition Grand Prize, the 2013 Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play, the 2013 Calgary Critics Award for Best New Script, and the 2013 Woodward/Newman Drama Award. It was a finalist for the 2012 STAGE International Script Competition (Judges included 3 Pulitzer Prize winners and 2 Nobel Prize winners), and is on the short-list for the 2014 Gwen Pharis Ringwood Drama Prize (Writers' Guild of Alberta) and the long-list for the 2014 James Tait Black Drama Award (University of Edinburgh/National Theatre of Scotland). Having written a book on laser eye surgery, Lakra divides his work time between his ophthalmology practice and his creative endeavours, but he has a range of new creative work in progress-including a supernatural thriller screenplay-so Lakra will bring a lively trans-disciplinary creative perspective to the Reading Series to kick off the 2014-2015 season.

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 18, 2014 - September 18, 2014

The Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre in Zambia was founded 40 years ago by Canadian Jesuit Br. Paul Desmarais. What began as a center of conventional (institutional) agriculture, has evolved into a leading center in sustainable organic agriculture, which works with thousands of small scale farmers. Br. Paul will share how this journey has taken shape, why organic farming is the way to a sustainable future for the small scale farmers he works with, and the challenges that conventional farming and seed harmonization pose for rural farmers in Zambia.

Cristiana Pegoraro - A Piano Recital (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 18, 2014 - September 18, 2014

To celebrate the Italian Presidency of the Council of the Europrean Union, the Consulate General of Italy, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Vancouver, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan, presents a concert by acclaimed Italian pianist Cristiana Pegoraro, with music by Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Lecuona and Pegoraro herself. Pegoraro started her career as a pianist at a very early age, devoting the years of her artistic development to perfecting her technique and developing her execution of the works of the great composers. She quickly established herself on the international stage as a classical pianist, but her passion, personality and creativity pushed her beyond classical music, resulting in her being recognized by critics as one of the best interpreters of music by the masters of Latin America, as well as one of the most interesting composers of the newer generation in her own right.

Round Table and Discussion on Bill C-36: Proposed Changes to Canada's Prostitution Laws (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 18, 2014 - September 18, 2014

Make plans now to attend "Round Table and Discussion on Bill C-36: Proposed Changes to Canada's Prostitution Laws" on September 18th, 2014, co-sponsored by the Community Research Unit, Faculty of Arts, and the Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan. The December 20, 2013 Supreme Court of Canada's decision in Canada v. Bedford (2013 SCC 72) struck down parts of Canada's existing prostitution legislation. The federal government has since redrafted the laws that were deemed unconstitutional and tabled legislation, Bill C-36, to be taken up in the fall session of Parliament. In this round table and subsequent discussion, representatives from community organizations will advocate different positions in response to Bill C-36. Decriminalization, the Nordic Model, and perspectives from law enforcement will be represented.

Comprehensive Poverty Reduction Strategies in Canada: Policy or Window Dressing? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 17, 2014 - September 17, 2014

Presented by Charles Plante, Policy Director, Upstream: Institute for a Healthy Society Comprehensive Poverty Reduction Strategies (CPRS) have become a central pillar of poverty policy in Canada. Since Quebec's Act to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion in 2002, all except two Canadian provinces have committed to adopting CPRS. Do CPRS actually reduce poverty? Or are CPRS just window dressing for extant provincial policy approaches, some effective and others not? This presentation introduces a framework for evaluating CPRS in Canada, and presents early efforts at evaluation. In addition, Charles will also provide updates on two other projects that are nearing completion, the Poverty Costs Final Report and the tentatively titled One Regime or Many? Social Policy and Welfare Outcomes in Canada's Four Major Provinces.

O.D. Skelton: The Work of the World, 1923-1941 (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 16, 2014 - September 16, 2014

During the years between the world wars and into the Second World War, O. D. Skelton was the chief foreign policy advisor to Canada's prime ministers and a lonely advocate for the country's "out and out" independence from Great Britain. Norman Hillmer's edition of Skelton's powerful and eloquent writings on international affairs illuminates his work and his world - co-operating and clashing with Prime Ministers Mackenzie King and R. B. Bennett in an attempt to keep Canada in the international arena and at the same time away from its troubles; maneuvering at imperial conferences in London and at League of Nations meetings in Geneva; systematically building up the Department of External Affairs and the Canadian diplomatic service as instruments of a distinctive national interest; confronting the Manchurian, Ethiopian, and Czech crises of the 1930s; aligning himself with senior francophone politicians such as Ernest Lapointe and Raoul Dandurand; watching in despair as the devils broke loose in Europe and Asia and continents descended into war; and, after the fall of France, moving away from his Canada First views about the Second World War to a realization of the importance of the fight for freedom abroad.

O.D. Skelton and the Work of Scholars (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 16, 2014 - September 16, 2014

This seminar considers the purpose of documents generated within and for government, and the use made of them by scholars. In his address Dr. Hillmer draws on his work on O.D. Skelton - the subject of a soon-to-be-released book with the University of Toronto Press - who generated many such documents that are regularly used by historians, political scientists, lawyers and others to answer their questions. The question posed here is whether sufficient care is taken to consider context and motivations when using such records? Dr. Norman Hillmer's many books and numerous articles concentrate on themes in international affairs, politics, and conflict, and he is a former co-editor, with Margaret MacMillan, of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs publication, International Journal. Professor Hillmer's full-scale Skelton biography, O. D. Skelton: A Portrait of Canadian Ambition, will be published by the University of Toronto Press in the spring of 2015.

The First World War: Why Did It Happen? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 10, 2014 - September 10, 2014

Dr. Ian Germani, History Professor at the University of Regina, considers five recently published works by historians on the origins of WWI. The problem of assessing responsibility for the outbreak of war remains deeply controversial, with some historians emphasizing the roles of Germany and Austria-Hungary, and others those of France and Russia. A century later after the event, the outbreak of WWI still has lessons to teach us.
